Embroidery project

In this project, I explore the intersection between traditional craftsmanship and modern living through the lens of embroidery and Hygge. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which emphasizes handcraftsmanship and authenticity, I’ve created a space that celebrates both artistic expression and mindful living.

The assignment: As part of this project, we were asked to renovate an existing apartment on 42 Goloumb Street, Haifa.
an additional floor was added, and the roof was rebuilt approximately one meter higher than its original height. This intervention created a new upper level with a sloped roof, which presented a design challenge due to reduced standing and usable height along the edges of the floor.

Embroidery, Slowing Down, and Mindfulness
Embroidery is more than a decorative technique - it's an exercise in mindfulness. Each stitch is a moment of meditation, a deliberate movement requiring full presence. In our fast-paced world, incorporating elements of embroidery into a space invites us to slow down, observe the small details, and appreciate the beauty in the slow process. When we look at embroidery, we see evidence of time, patience, and attention - values I've embedded throughout the design.

Design Elements and Partitions
Light is a central player in the home's design, creating an ongoing dialogue with the embroidery elements. Throughout the day and especially at night, rays of light create a changing display of light and shadow through the various embroideries. The embroidered elements in the house serve a dual purpose - they explore the delicate balance between privacy and openness in family life. Like the delicate stitches in embroidery that reveal their full beauty only upon close inspection, these partitions create layers of visibility and concealment. The metal mesh in the staircase allows glances and light to permeate, creating a sense of connection between floors while maintaining intimacy.

Hygge and Home
Hygge, a Danish concept representing comfort, warmth, and tranquillity, is more than a design style - it's a way of life. It's the art of creating an intimate and pleasant atmosphere, emphasizing simplicity, comfort, and connection between people. In this design, Hygge is expressed through the use of natural materials, soft textures, and spaces that encourage family intimacy.

Home Description - Ground Floor
The first floor is designed as a flowing space combining functionality with elegance. From the welcoming entrance opens a view to the spacious living room, leading to a dining area and open kitchen. Large windows in the living room and dining area overlook the magnificent bay view, while the bay window in the kitchen faces the green slope on which the house rests, surrounded by green trees. The unique location allows connection to contrasting landscapes - the sea on one hand and green nature on the other. I created an intimate seating area and lounge space, allowing for various family gatherings. The studio space provides a quiet corner for creation, and the service and laundry area blends into the front of the house, allowing access to the porch and ventilation for dirty shoes.Home Description

Second Floor
The second floor is designed around an impressive double height space, illuminated by a large glass window with embedded embroidered fabric. Three bedrooms - a spacious master bedroom and two children's rooms - surround the central space. The corridor is naturally lit by a skylight that adds a dimension of height and light to the space. The master bedroom includes an attached bathroom, and there is an additional general bathroom. The water bar integrates comfortably in the hallway, and the embroidered expanded metal mesh rises to the ceiling height.
